Florence, Italy

Duomo view from our Airbnb balcony

For our third stop in Italy, we spent two days in the breathtaking city of Florence. No surprise, this ended up being our favorite city on the trip! The food is next level, the history/museums were unreal (home of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci), the European architecture was gorgeous, and of course theew is the breathtaking Tuscan country side… ah take me back! When I picture Italy, Florence was what I envision. I wish we could have spent a few more days here since there is so much to see and do. If there is any city that I would recommend time and time again, it is here. From the cobblestone streets, delicious Italian cuisine, to our beautiful Airbnb, it was truly pure bliss. I can’t wait to come back and do it all over again one day!

ItaliaRail from Pisa to Florence

Travel

After our day trip to Pisa (from Rome) we took a one hour train ride to Florence booked on ItaliaRail. For about $10 per person- this is the easiest and cheapest way to get around Italy. Grab a coffee or snack then relax on the super convenient train system while enjoying the views.

The Florence train station was very close to the city center but since we had luggage, decided to take an Uber to our Airbnb. As a tip, the city center is made of cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways therefore cars cannot access most of these roads. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes!

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, or as the locals know it, The Duomo

Airbnb

I can’t begin to express how happy we were with our Duomo View Airbnb. First of all… the view of the Duomo (pictured above) was breathtaking! The apartment was a great size which included a living room, washer, dining table, kitchen, bedroom, and balcony. It was perfect for the two of us as it was in heart of Florence just a quick walk away from everything. Conveniently, there was a coffee shop directly downstairs along with other restaurant and dessert options. The only downside to our stay was that there was no elevator so be prepared to carry your luggage up a few flight of stairs.

Food

The best food by far was here in Florence. After speaking with family/friends beforehand, we were told that this would be the case. They were all right so I am so glad we made reservations ahead of time. If there was one place in the world I would go back to for a delicious meal, it is here but more specifically- La Buchetta Food and Wine. I can’t recommend it enough!

La Giostra

A delicious and very romantic dinner restaurant in the city. This was highly recommended to us and did not disappoint! Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time as it was fully booked the night we went in March.

All’Antico Vinaio

The famous (and for good reason!) sandwich shop in Florence. Typically there are lines of people waiting to get a sandwich but since we went out of tourist season, we were able to walk right in. Very thankful for that but fun fact- there are 4 locations all next to each other. So be sure to look for the shortest line and try it out for yourself- yum! Also, since we don’t eat pork we were able to substitute our sandwich order for bresaola (beef).

La Buccetta

Best pasta we have ever had! We ordered the mozzarella cheese tasting, angels and demons gnocchi (pictured above with no meat), florentine steak, roasted potatoes, tiramisu, and the homemade cheesecake.

Florentine Steak- a must in Florence!
