Life in Raleigh, North Carolina: Things to do, where to eat and shop!

Nashville native here! After growing up in a city that draws in thousands of tourists a year, I started to dream of a more quiet life… outside of the city but close enough that we could enjoy the luxury of having things to do year round. Then I met my fiancé, a Raleigh native born and raised! Oh what a breath of fresh air that was. My family actually lived in Raleigh for a year when I was in the 4th grade so I already had some fond memories and was excited at the idea of settling down in North Carolina.

I wanted to write this in case you are anything like me and new to the city! Where do we go on the weekends? Where do I get my hair done? haha all of the things we question when moving somewhere new. I hope that once I have lived here longer, I will be able to write a new post with more recommendations but for now…. this is my experience!

This city is vastly growing with so many things to do all across the triangle- the term that encompasses Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Due to three major universities (North Carolina State University, Duke University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) these cities have had booming economic developments, therefore the area has a lot to offer singles and families alike. So during the pandemic, we quarantined together and within months, I started applying for jobs in NC, quit my Vanderbilt position, and decided to officially call Raleigh home! Since it has only been about a year here, I still discover new things and fall in love with the city every time we explore. So I thought I would share my experience so far and detail (with new eyes) on why I love living here!

The locals. I can’t say enough about how kind the people are. Everyone has a different experience but meeting work colleagues, new friends, and just kind strangers on the street reminds me of why I love the south. Hospitable neighbors, feeling safe, and welcomed have been the greatest greeting to my time in the city so far. As much as I love the fast pace lifestyle, we are truly enjoying the calmer suburbs of Raleigh.Location. With so many areas to live within the triangle, there are great housing options in the city or within the suburbs. Because of the affordable living, growing job market, and vast diversity, there is a perfect home for everyone. Another great perk is that we are located within a few short hours from the mountains and beaches! Weather. Growing up in the south, I never enjoyed the cold. We just aren’t equipped for snow and freezing temperates… not in our DNA :) Not to say that a few snow days aren’t welcome though! So thankfully moving to North Carolina was not a drastic change from what I was use to in Tennessee. Essentially, the state gets all four seasons with very mild winters. A few snow days here and there with maybe an inch or so to get your winter fix. Perfect!Coffee: The one destination in every city that I take seriously. Coffee matters to me (umm three cups a day) so discovering the best in Raleigh has been fun! My two favorite spots so far have been Heirloom Brew Shop and Iris Coffee Lab for some unique blue matcha coffee!Food. At this point, I think we are all foodies. Who doesn’t love a good pizza, pasta, or even sushi?! The diverse food options actually surprised me when I first came to visit. I was use to Nashville Hot Chicken and ample amounts of brunch spots so couldn’t want to explore (DoorDash) local restaurants. Here are a few of my favorites spots:Randy’s Pizza: The largest and most delicious pizza in the triangle! Order the 30” pizza and wings, oh my!Daniel’s Italian: Located in a suburb outside of Raleigh, this little gem is always packed and full of flavor. Nazara Indian Bistro: I am always looking for a great Indian restaurant that is packed with spices and authentic flavor. This is the spot! We always try to support local businesses and think this place should be on your list to try.Flying Biscuit: All day breakfast. I mean shall I say more?Dame’s Chicken and Waffles: With three locations in the area, this spot is a fan favorite! Sipcha and MilkLab for your boba tea fix!Morgan’s Street Food Hall: This indoor food center is located downtown Raleigh and a fun, multi-cultural dining experience. It has a variety of food and dessert options to choose from while satisfying everyone in your group. Super tasty cuisines to grab a bite while sampling a few restaurants as you explore the city.

We tried Cousin’s Main Lobster, The Bowls, YoHo Hibachi & Sushi Burrito, Boba Brew, Amitie Macarons, and Raleigh Rolls. Yum!

My favorite place to shop is at The Streets at SouthPoint which is an outdoor shopping center that connects to an indoor mall in Durham, NC. There are some great vintage shops downtown like Father and Son, located in the Warehouse District near Urban Outfitters. On the weekends, we love exploring the Raleigh Farmer’s Market where you can support local farmers, find amazing honey, and take home some fresh flowers. There are also great museums for families like the North Carolina Museum of Art. Recently, I needed to get my hair done and discovered Caban and Co.- located in Wake Forest, NC. The atmosphere is very boho and the stylist were all great- check out my girl Rachel!

Discovering new parts of the city everyday and hope this helps if you are considering moving to Raleigh!

Until next time…
